Be There

I remember this time last year waiting around checking my phone even more often than I usually do. We were in the home stretch of grand-baby watch, and kept thinking it was quite possible that our family might grow before the ball dropped in Times Square.

It turns out, a few weeks later they literally had to pry (and pray) our (big) little guy into this world. He showed that while he got his curls from his mama, and his dance moves from his daddy, he got his stubbornness and strong will from his “Gaga Kimmie”. I’ll never forget the mini-army that surrounded our family during that 48-hour ordeal, supporting, loving, cheering, and praying for his safe arrival. I’ll be forever grateful that they were all just there…

After the promotion to GMA status, I found myself with an overwhelming desire to pour my heart, soul, and time into this new little adventure. When we quickly realized that 3am help was the hardest to come by, I started racking up “couch nights” to add to my hotel nights, in order to have the honor of squeezing in a few midnight feedings in those early, precious (but exhausting) months. Some of those sleepless nights were hard, and the work mornings the next days were harder (praise the Lord for Philz Coffee, our family’s latest addiction), but just being there was worth it, so we made it work.

Meanwhile, work life was also changing and evolving. I knew there were big things in store for my next career chapter. Big moves don’t come without a lot of stress and worry and “what ifs” as well. As I look back on that time, I’m reminded of the handful of people (in and out of my work world) who were right there by my side every single day, coaching, guiding, and encouraging me along the way.

As I settled into my new work home (what a blessing that has been), I’ve been so incredibly welcomed by a gaggle of new teammates – some of them strangers, some of them old friends – who have been there daily, helping me keep my head up, and feet on the ground through that oh-so-fun season of being “new”. And now, as I just celebrated 7 months at Creative Planning, we can officially say that the newness has most definitely worn off! We are so excited about what’s in store for 2025!

I think the biggest lesson 2024 taught me was the importance of just being there. Whether that’s having the honor of being there for someone I love, or being so blessed by somebody taking the time to be there for (or with) me. Sometimes it’s coming to the rescue and saving the day. Other times it’s answering the desperate phone call and helping make sense of what seems to be a crisis in the moment. It could be that constant, daily encouragement that helps someone through one more tough day. Or occasionally, it’s literally just sitting there in the dark at 3am, rocking a baby back to sleep, and reminding a mama she’s not alone. You may never know the true impact you’re making in someone’s life, but never underestimate God’s ability to use you if you’re just willing to be there.

May 2025 bring us all many moments to be there for those we hold most dear!

In My Dreams Job

It’s been quite a whirlwind last few months for me…it was clear that I needed to push the pause and reset buttons in a big way. As some of you have seen via social, I’ve had a welcome stretch of full-time “Gma life”, which I could certainly get used to! But alas, today is the first day of a new opportunity, a new chapter and a very welcome pivot…and wow, please don’t wake me up if I’m dreaming!

Over the last decade, I’ve devoted my career to educating firms on how to automate manual processes with technology and build a tech stack. I had a front row seat during the dawn of the modern-day outsourced accounting model. I’ve worked with firms of all sizes on the concept of being their clients’ trusted advisor. And I managed to span the range of ProAdvisors to Big 4 firms. After two years of narrowing my focus to one specific niche, I started to get the feeling deep down:

my passion is bigger than Sales Tax…

A few months ago, as I began considering what was next for me, I was overwhelmed by the support from my trusted community of people. All I can say is never underestimate the power of your network. From simple encouragement to strategic and out-of-the-box thinking, I felt so uplifted by everyone around me. In the end, I had several opportunities to explore, which was both exciting and daunting.

With the help and guidance of my very own career sherpa (Kane Polakoff, I’ll be forever grateful to you for your partnership and friendship), I put together a list of what really matters to me. At the top of my list were things like:

  • Working for an organization with an incredible culture
  • To surround myself with smart, hard-working people I respect, admire, and who believe in me
  • To regain the ability to have some semblance of work-life balance (or at least “work-life integration”)
  • And finally, to find a home where I can confidently say this is what I was meant to do, and truly make a difference for a very long time

I also firmly believe that you should never underestimate the value of a hallway encounter (this is something I learned back in 2011 at my first ITA meeting – paging Rick David). It’s incredible how a 5-minute goodbye conversation can turn into an opportunity beyond your wildest dreams.

For anyone who knows Chris GalloMatt West, recent addition Brian Champ, and the entire Creative Planning Business Services team, you already know that all of the boxes noted above were checked. When a networking brainstorm session took a turn for a fast-track recruitment discussion, I was beyond honored. I’m so humbled to have them consider me the newest addition to their dream team.

Today I start a new leg of my career, as I leave the software vendor side and join a going concern of a firm as Solution Sales Leader, Outsourced Business Accounting Services. In my role, I’ll be working alongside a cross-functional team of Creative Planning Business Managers, Wealth Managers, and our growing Business Services team, with an emphasis on enhancing our firm’s relationships with our trusted technology partners, and a mission to exponentially grow our practice. I cannot wait to kick things off in a big way.

On the path to announcing this new role, I made the decision to turn down an offer of my dream job, because, at the end of the day, I literally accepted my “in my dreams” job. I cannot wait to see everyone in Las Vegas next week – look for me in CPBS Blue and Gold!
